Menstruation
Menstruation is naturally occurred phenomena in girls. In which physical, psychology, mental, emotional as well as social changes occur. It is most important part of girls in their life cycle. Sometimes menstruation also know as means or period. At, the time of menstruation blood flow through urethra along with vagina. It occurs at the cycle of 28 or 30 days. It began between the age of 12 years to 19 years in girls and it is most important to manage the proper hygiene at that time. As, if we neglect there are high chance of occurrence of reproductive diseases and infection.
Menstruation hygiene management refers to access to
menstrual hygiene products to absorb or collect the flow of blood during
periods privacy to change the materials and access to facilities dispose of used
menstrual materials. The menstrual hygiene day celebrate at may 28 as menstrual
hygiene day.
Globally, at least 500 million women and girls lack properly
access to menstrual hygiene facilities. Likely, in Nepal according to world
vision 2020 71.7% of adolescent girls know about the menstruation before
MENRCHE (the occurrence 0f first menstruation). 59.2% of the girls know that
chaupadi is illegal and 10% of girls said that it is legal.
Mother is the first personal who taught about the
mensuration and management of mensuration hygiene. So, it is most important to
provide knowledge about the menstrual health to married women because in Nepal there
are a lot of cultural misconception which restrict to maintain menstrual
hygiene. For, the management of menstrual health in Nepal government are
providing the concept of menstrual health to the school children. As most of
the girls began her first cycle at school due to monthly period 26.9% of the
girls missed school in the last 12 months (sources: world vision 2020). To maintain
the mensural hygiene there must be access of water and shop at the school and
public toilet. Also for the privacy, girls and boys toilet should be make
separated.
Types of material used during the menstruation
1. Cotton clothes
It is most common practice used
from the many years. Nowadays, it is mainly used in village area. And by the
poor group of people who don’t have money. Most of girls used such clothes for
one time only. Some of them used same clothes 2 or 3 times. 83% of menstruating
girls still used cloth (NDHS 2016 report).
2. Sanitary pad
This absorbent
is taken as the most hygiene and easy to used during periods. One pad is only
used for one time. And this is better and hygienic than the cotton clothes
pads. In Nepal only 15% of menstruating girls used sanitary pads. Many of the girls still does not use anything
during periods.
Now in Nepal, there are many cultural practices and believes
about the menstrual health. The different types of believes sometimes being the
useful but mainly it affects the health of the girls. The regarding the
menstruation are:
Chhaupadi pratha
It is one types
of taboos practices during the means. It is mainly practiced by the far and mid-western
region of Nepal. They think that girls became impure during the periods. So,
they have to stay in the dark room. Girls are not allowed see any boys at that
time. They are not allowed to eat the delicious and nutritious food. As at that
time they need more nutritive food. According to central bureau of statistics
2015 2.9% of girls are forced to stay in chhaupadi.
In many community girls have to stay in the animal shed. Due
to which they have to faced the problem of different diseases like UTI, cancer,
irritation, hormonal imbalances, clotting disorder, polycystic ovary syndrome
(PCOS)- cysts on the ovaries. 2.7% of girls stay in animal shed during
menstruation (Central, Bureau of statistics, 2015).
Stay in the different room, this is most common in the
brahmin community. At that time they are not allowed to see her father and
brothers. Even, they are not allowed to touch or heard their voice. It is 25%
according to Central Bureau of statistics 2015.
Girls are not allowed to take part in the religious activities
like marriage, pooja, death ceremony, religious plant like tulsi, pepal, flower
and so on. Girls are not allowed to eat different variety of food. At the time they
have to eat other food instead of food made for family members. Girls have to
take leave from job or school during that time because they are not allowed to
touch any boys. According to central bureau of statistics it is in 2.3 % of
population who practice this.
Conclusion
Menstruation is not a problem as people think. It is
naturally phenomenon the practices which are done in our society should be
stopped. It is illegal also according to law. People must have to behave them
similarly as they do in normal days more than that people must care about them
during mensuration. They have to provide balance diet; they have to give emotional
support also. for these misconception government as well as private sector are
doing the different program to control the occurrence of death and diseases due
to unhygienic practice of the menstruation.
